Description
Al Hrabosky's Ballpark Saloon
The first new venue to exploit this construction boom is Al Hrabosky's Ballpark Saloon, at Cerre and Eighth streets just south of the heavy-building zone.
Hrabosky's isn't going to win many design awards, looking curiously similar to an oversized tool shed; the interior, meanwhile, is a testimony to the power of pressed tin and drywall. But the Ballpark Saloon does have a massive patio, which has already seen use at the end of the 2004 season, when the place rushed its opening to coincide with the Cardinals' playoff push. It made it, just in time, hosting after-game parties and radio broadcasts.
Hrabosky's decorations, as you might expect, are built around baseball, and the room with high ceilings is filled with knickknacks, curios and images of the bar's personality-challenged namesake. There's even a "Curse of the Bambino" triptych, which, sadly, is already out of date. The idea is to keep the baseball fan's eye moving, and there's something on every wall, nook and cranny to remind you that this is, in fact, a ballpark saloon.
